{"id":4474,"date":"2011-03-03T07:40:40","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T12:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Ask-a-Pro\/?p=4474"},"modified":"2016-11-16T10:51:21","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T15:51:21","slug":"ferrari-458-nero-daytona-full-detail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Ask-a-Pro\/ferrari-458-nero-daytona-full-detail\/","title":{"rendered":"Ferrari 458 Nero Daytona Full Detail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About a month ago I was given the pleasure to travel just north of San Francisco to Tiburon and work on this stunning Nero Daytona (black metallic) F458. \u00a0This being one of the first deliveries to the Bay Area, the car had already clocked a <strong>staggering<\/strong> 300 miles on the odometer. \u00a0Although, as we&#8217;ll see from the pictures, the owner of the car does in fact drive it! \u00a0The cards for this car played out as follows: A proper wash and decontamination, a mild polish over the course of a day and a half, some interior cleaning, engine bay detailing, and a couple coats of wax to top everything off. \u00a0In total, there was about 15 hours put in to the car over the course of two days. \u00a0As many professional detailers will reiterate, YES even brand new cars can benefit from a proper and thorough detail.<\/p>\n<p>Now on to the goods! The pictures:<\/p>\n<p>I already knew what to expect as it&#8217;s been well documented from various articles on this blog how poorly Ferrari&#8217;s are prepped form the factory. \u00a0So with that in mind, I began to assess the damage. \u00a0Some mud splashes here and there:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5293\/5483871865_beea2ed024_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>General accumulation of dirt from the rain we had gotten earlier that week<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5098\/5483872819_1dafcd76a3_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then I started finding all of the &#8220;presents&#8221; left over by the boys at Maranello! Polish residue and splatter all over the car:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5297\/5483872523_647606f17a_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Including the engine bay!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5294\/5483872697_b39e261f11_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5296\/5484467468_6713510400_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once my initial inspection was complete. I started with the decontamination. I always start with the wheels first. Not wanting to replace five figure carbon ceramic brakes, I didn&#8217;t use any chemical wheel cleaners, simply a medium dilution ratio of <a title=\"Chemical Guys Citrus Wash\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Chemical-Guys-M31\/Citrus-Wash-P410\/128-oz-S2\/\" target=\"_self\">Chemical Guys Citrus Wash<\/a> and various brushes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5177\/5484467530_8f992f5b57_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And to get rid of all the polish residue found around the car, I used a boars hair brush, and diluted <a title=\"Optimum Power Clean\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Optimum-OPT-M36\/Power-Clean-P287\/128-oz-S2\/\" target=\"_self\">Optimum Power Clean.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5291\/5484467790_c3b426e5f9_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The car was then washed with the<a title=\"Two bucket method\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Ask-a-Pro\/the-grit-guard-2x4-wash-method\/\" target=\"_self\"> two bucket method<\/a>, and dried. \u00a0It was then time to inspect the car in the sunlight. \u00a0I was waiting for the holograms to show themselves!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5171\/5483873093_c2c93eb2df_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5295\/5483873185_410832f8d1_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5098\/5483873507_1b1ee2b694_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5014\/5483873689_9dba84e984_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the initial in-sun inspection complete, and the car properly decontaminated, I got in the car to pull it in the garage. What an amazing view the one analog dial, and two LCD monitors provide!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5172\/5483873897_a7eb66699f_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I then inspected the paint using various lighting sources from 1000w halogen lights, to 120 lumen LEDs, to the <a title=\"Brinkmann Dual Xenon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Brinkmann-M45\/Maxfire-Dual-Xenon-Swirl-Finder-Spotlight-P466\/\" target=\"_self\">Brinkmann Dual Xenon Light.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5291\/5484468434_560d548402_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I then started to test polishing combinations. I ended up going with a 3-step process that included the <a title=\"PC 7424XP\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Porter-Cable-M17\/7424XP-Random-Orbital-Buffer-P331\/\" target=\"_self\">PC 7424 XP<\/a> and <a title=\"Surf Buf pad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Surbuf-M47\/R-Series-MicroFingers-Buffing-Pads-P485\/2x-55-S2\/\" target=\"_self\">Surfbuf Pads<\/a> with <a title=\"M105\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Meguiars-M43\/Ultra-Cut-Compound-M105-P388\/32-oz-S1\/\" target=\"_self\">M105<\/a>, followed by <a title=\"M205\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Meguiars-M43\/Ultra-Finishing-Polish-205-P389\/32-oz-S1\/\" target=\"_self\">Meguiars 205<\/a> with a <a title=\"Tangerine Hydro Tech Pad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Lake-Country-M7\/Hydro-Tech-Tangerine-Ultra-Fine-Polishing-Pad-P407\/55-inch-S2\/\" target=\"_self\">Tangerine hydro tech pad<\/a>, and finished off with the <a title=\"Makita Rotary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Makita-M42\/9227C-X3-Rotary-Buffer-P373\/\" target=\"_self\">Rotary<\/a> and <a title=\"Menzerna PO85rd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Menzerna-M10\/PO85RD-Polish-P217\/32-oz-S1\/\" target=\"_self\">Menzerna PO85rd <\/a>with a <a title=\"Lake Country Black finishing pad\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Lake-Country-M7\/Black-Finishing-Pad-P60\/55-inch-S2\/\" target=\"_self\">Black finishing pad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the results under the same lighting conditions:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5212\/5484468606_6b9428d5df_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using the line down the middle of the hood as a natural 50\/50 indicator and the 1000w halogen lights, you can see the left side of the hood is finished off, and hologram free, while the right side still has plenty of holograms to be removed (towards the top of the picture).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5256\/5483874139_2e99eb4ee6_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the half of the hood that I tested combinations on was completely finished down, I pulled it out in to the sun for the true correction results.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5255\/5483875121_1310cd19dd_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remember, this is what we were starting with:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5055\/5483875343_15076049dc_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ferrari <strong>must<\/strong> have had detailers in mind when they made the little triangle that used to be what the mirrors on the F360 and F430 were mounted on gloss black. \u00a0I was able to squeeze my buffer on to this small panel to make sure the correction of this area matched the rest of the car.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5216\/5484470006_0a5759023b_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5134\/5483875579_772ed12518_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By far the most heavily damaged area of the car were the rocker panels. I guess whom ever prepped this car after paint gave up after wet sanding and very heavy compounding!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5211\/5484470194_a1e0822505_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5299\/5483875949_bc6a5c3e59_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some careful work with a 3&#8243; pad, extra blue painters tape, and steady polishing yielded the the results I was after.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5214\/5484470642_76a97bec92_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5091\/5483876147_450aa548f8_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the area between the 3rd brake light and the &#8220;F E R R A R I&#8221; badge looking a bit messy:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5217\/5483876477_961b665796_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then it was all cleaned up:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5020\/5483876585_987ab4de93_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The rear bumper and license plate area was also fairly heavily damaged.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5300\/5484471344_b1526ede2b_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5252\/5483876731_2fae6c5fb0_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5252\/5483876879_6c8af6c220_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then after:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5094\/5484471788_99d6d485ff_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5297\/5483877255_fa4ed674d6_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the polishing was complete I moved on to the exhaust tips.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5015\/5484472524_1d854f16c1_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5091\/5483877849_7bca5b41d8_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The wheels were polished with an all-in-one, and then sealed with a spray-sealant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5138\/5483877673_df57e59394_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5256\/5483877475_f0ba490843_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5172\/5484466716_aa12ea3292_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The engine bay was finished off as well:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5297\/5484466900_72e7b2ac46_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5178\/5483872231_78b9b6730e_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5171\/5484466986_86557bd27b_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The interior was vacuumed. The gorgeous seats with its tan leather and black daytona inserts was protected with <a title=\"Leatherique Pristine Clean\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Leatherique-M8\/Prestine-Clean-P64\/32-oz-S2\/\" target=\"_self\">Leatherique Pristine Clean<\/a>, as well as the rest of the leather hides.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5218\/5483871973_a3763d667a_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5297\/5484466646_e27a67a7cc_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5255\/5484466598_f3c28e45b7_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5014\/5483878095_b5924cf26f_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And finally, the finished product.
