458 Italia New Car Prep and Paint Correction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After finally going through some photos taken a couple years ago when I detailed one of the best exotics on the road, I wanted to share its story and some photos on the blog here.\u00a0 The car in question is a brand new 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia.\u00a0 Well, it was brand new at the time of these photos and the detail.\u00a0 I was actually recommended to the owner of this gorgeous 458 by my good friend and our very own blog manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Ask-a-Pro\/author\/todd-cooperider\/\" target=\"_blank\">Todd Cooperider<\/a>.\u00a0 After seeing the quality of work I performed on his other two cars, a BMW 650 and Porsche Cayenne, the client decided to have me work on the 458 from the start.\u00a0 I won&#8217;t spend too much time introducing the 458 as many are already aware of this amazing machine, so I&#8217;ll go straight to the photos and some information about the detail.<\/p>\n<p>The car was purchased at a local exotic dealership in Chicagoland, which I won&#8217;t name so as not to soil their name online in a blatant manner, but the delivery condition was quite lacking for a $300,000+ exotic sports car!\u00a0 The dealer did whatever prep they usually do, but prior to doing any waxing, they installed paint protection film as the client requested.\u00a0 The film was applied to the entire front end (hood, bumper and fenders), mirrors, rear bumper and side skirts.\u00a0 The film itself was of good quality and the application was spot on, but the dealer managed to ruin it immediately by what could only be described as &#8220;waxing the edges of the protective film&#8221;!\u00a0 Every edge of the film had wax residue on at least a few spots along the edge, which gave me the opportunity to spend a good 3 hours removing it.\u00a0 There was also wax residue throughout the car in certain crevices and on panel edges.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the horrible wax application, there were typical Ferrari defects from the factory.\u00a0 While some of the holograms may have been from a bad dealer prep, there were obvious sanding marks on quite a few areas of the car.\u00a0 Overall, I spent about 28-30hrs on the car between the cleaning, correction and wax application at the end.\u00a0 The interior got only a quick wipedown as that was in perfect shape and needed nothing.\u00a0 Onto the photos&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here we see quite a bit of wax just sitting in the key hole&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(1)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8187\/8359085308_a23fc7f3a8_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wax residue left by the dealership &#8220;detailers&#8221; on the rear driver quarter panel&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(2)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8195\/8358023073_b4b91cf763_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some wax on the rear diffuser piece&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(3)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8075\/8359084906_3823fccbac_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Along the driver door top edge&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(4)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8356\/8359084602_e2829a0b83_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And of course the beautiful job of waxing the clear protection film&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(5)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8330\/8358022405_f1990fd99b_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Can&#8217;t deliver a $300k Ferrari without some dirt under the fuel door&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(6)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8077\/8359084198_fd75357581_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A TON of wax dust and residue under the vent grille by the engine bay&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(7)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8232\/8359083976_662a5a1997_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Reason behind all that dust?\u00a0 Someone waxed the actual grille&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(8)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8360\/8359083726_a7b5255667_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let the cleaning begin!\u00a0 Multiple cotton swabs were used to carefully remove all the wax residue from the film edges&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(9)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8333\/8359083450_217f8af4aa_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As well as other hard to reach areas&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(12)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8228\/8359082756_01fdd18eee_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(11)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8356\/8359082942_0c78e66877_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cotton swabs were also used to give the wheels and brakes a thorough cleaning&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(10)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8378\/8358021237_d434b77479_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the washing and decontamination was completed, I got a chance to inspect the paint condition.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t as horrible as I&#8217;ve seen on some other Ferraris, but it surely wasn&#8217;t pretty.\u00a0 There were many sanding marks like the one below&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(13)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8325\/8358020519_28881b7ef7_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Swirl marks were predominantly present on the upper panels&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(14)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8466\/8358020071_8628c4edfc_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But there were also spots of heavier swirling on the doors and other side panels&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(15)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8336\/8358019727_e7639da355_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a thorough inspection and performing some test polishing to find pad\/polish combos (more on that later), we taped off areas like window edges, all the protective film edges, grilles, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(16)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8071\/8359081298_ca9e9f7852_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(17)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8223\/8358019149_36f76b07d6_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Polishing was done using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Flex-M26\/XC-3401-VRG-P128\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flex 3401 polisher<\/a> and various pads and polishes to achieve the best results&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(18)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8372\/8359080944_02be0d611d_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Porter-Cable-M17\/7424XP-Random-Orbital-Buffer-P331\/\" target=\"_blank\">Porter Cable 7424XP<\/a> polisher and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detailedimage.com\/Meguiars-M43\/DA-Microfiber-Cutting-Disc-Buffing-Pad-P515\/3-S3\/\" target=\"_blank\">3&#8243; Meguiar&#8217;s Microfiber pads<\/a> came in handy for correcting some tighter areas&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionBefore-(19)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8356\/8358018725_bb3a17648a_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a grueling 3 days and roughly 30 hours of work, we had a proper looking Ferrari 458 Italia!<\/p>\n<p>The wax residue was removed from all areas&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionAfter-(1)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8360\/8358027139_790fbfb832_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Every square inch of paint was thoroughly inspected and corrected to perfection, which left us with the following results&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionAfter-(2)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8470\/8358026911_deaa8dd0c1_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was the section where most sanding marks were present&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"LUSTR.F458CorrectionAfter-(3)\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8190\/8359088808_120c5dd576_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Few other places where there was heavy swirling before&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" after the detail, so I will get in touch with him and see if I can have a few to post on here along with the above photos.\u00a0 From April to November, the owner washes the car once or twice a month and I see it every 4-5 weeks for waxing, so the car receives great care and it surely shows.\u00a0 Aside from a few random swirl marks that will catch your eye only if the car is being meticulously inspected in the sunlight, it has remained flawless for just under two years now, all thanks to using proper techniques and quality products.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the products used in the detail:<br
