As detailers, we are always looking for tools that are highly effective and increase the efficiency of our procedures. Drying a vehicle after a wash is a crucial function. We need water off the surface fast and safely, without introducing any marring. The Gyeon Quartz Q2M Silk Drier checks both of those boxes with a very innovative fiber design that is extremely absorbent and easy to use.
The Silk Drier uses two different microfiber designs.
The long fiber side of the towel is designed to face downward and draw up the water from the paints surface.
The reverse tight knit side of the towel is designed to store water efficiently.
The edges of the towel are super soft and plush.
How To Use the Gyeon Silk Drier:
I think anyone reading this has likely come across a proper drying technique article before, but here we go.
The biggest thing to focus on when drying, aside from the surface being completely clean, is to dry the car in straight lines front to back. If you commit to only ever touching the vehicle in a single direction (this goes for washing too of course), then if you do induce light surface scratches they are in a single direction and can only be seen at certain angles. Swirl marks tend to be tons of multi directional, straight line scratches shown as “swirls” because your light source (the sun) is round.
I like to lay the Silk Drier out over a panel like so:
And then gently pull from the front corners slowly, allowing the Silk Drier to absorb the water underneath and remove it from the surface.
The Silk Drier is a fairly large towel (Gyeon makes a Silk Drier small and a silk mitt as well which we’ll write on later. The Silk Mitt is incredible for cleaning glass). When drying the sides of a vehicle I will roll it up a bit, grab the high end and low end to make sure the towel doesn’t hit the floor, and pull the towel over the panels.
The Silk Drier holds a TON of water. I will dry a standard car entirely before ringing it out, and the Silk Drier absorbs the most when it is a bit damp. Happy Drying!
