A full interior detail is more than just a quick wipe down, it is about thoroughly cleaning and protecting every surface inside your car so it looks and feels fresh for as long as possible. A proper interior detail involves cleaning fabrics, vinyl, leather, plastic, rubber trim, etc. while also protecting those surfaces from wear and UV damage.
Why Does Interior Care Matter?
Your vehicle’s interior sees a lot of use so inevitably it will encounter dirt, oils from skin, food particles, dust, and UV fading over time. Cleaning and protecting interior surfaces not only makes your car more enjoyable but also helps prevent fading, cracking, and long-term damage.

Interior Care How-to
Start by preparing the interior. Take out trash, personal items, and floor mats, so that there is nothing loose left on the interior. This gives you a blank slate to work with and shows you exactly what you will be targeting.
Carpet & Fabric Surfaces
1. Brush & Vacuum
- Use a firm bristle carpet brush to loosen dirt deep in upholstery fibers, mats or fabric seats.
- Start brushing in a corner and work your way towards one mid point from all corners and sections.
- Once you have made a pile of debris, use a vacuum to remove it.
- This two-step approach gets far more grime out than vacuuming alone.
2. Treat Stains
- Spot treat tough stains with a fabric or upholstery cleaner.
- Let it sit briefly, agitate with a brush, then vacuum again. If needed use hot water and a stronger cleaner with a firm bristle brush and repeat this process.
- If you have severe stains or soling, an extractor may provide a much deeper cleaning process
3. Protect
- Once clean and dry, use a fabric protector to help repel future stains and make future cleaning easier. In general you just spray them on and let them dry.
Hard Surfaces (Trim, Dash, Plastic)
1. Choose the Right Cleaner
- Use a dedicated interior cleaner that is safe on vinyl, plastic, rubber, and painted trim. Avoid harsh household chemicals or strong degreasers.
2. How to Clean
- Spray your cleaner onto a microfiber towel, not directly onto surfaces to avoid overspray on electronics, leather, seams, etc.
- Wipe dashboard, consoles, door panels, and other trim areas.
3. Deep Cleaning Tight Areas
- Use microfiber towels, detail brushes or soft brushes to get into vents, seams, buttons, and cup holders.
- A skinny brush and cleaner may be needed for some areas.
4. Protect Surfaces
- After cleaning, applying a protectant designed for interior plastics and vinyl to help reduce UV fading and make the surface look great today and in the future. Simply spray on a microfiber towel or applicator and apply a light coating, excessive product is not helpful.
Leather Surfaces
1. Clean First
- Vacuum heavy build ups and in the leather seams where dirt and crumbs often accumulate.
- Use a leather specific cleaner to remove oils and grime. A microfiber towel and a quick wipe will help remove light dirt and grime.
- For any areas with more dirt and grime, agitation with a leather specific brush to help separate and lift away contaminants for easy removal with a clean microfiber towel. A slightly damp microfiber cloth can be helpful.
2. Condition & Protect
- Once clean and dry, apply a quality leather conditioner to keep the leather hydrated and soft. Conditioners will help prevent drying or cracking over time, and restore natural oils to the surface. Usually you apply a liberal amount to an applicator and spread around the seat then let it sit for several minutes. With a dry or slightly damp microfiber towel wipe away the excess conditioner. Check back in a few minutes to ensure you removed all the excess product as you want to avoid getting it on your clothes.
- Once your seats are cleaned, conditioned and dry, applying protection will help prevent wear from abrasion and harmful uv rays.
- Spray protection on a clean towel or applicator and apply a thin coating to the surface. Wipe away excess product with a clean cloth.
- Avoid products that leave leather greasy or overly shiny. This can attract dirt and sometimes even age the material faster.
Suede & Alcantara Surfaces
Suede and Alcantara style materials require a very gentle approach, as they can be easily damaged or stained if over-saturated or scrubbed too aggressively. In most cases, less is more with suede, stick to vacuuming and brushing whenever possible, and only use liquid cleaners as a last resort.
1. Gentle Cleaning
- Start with regular maintenance by lightly vacuuming the surface using a soft brush attachment to remove loose dirt and debris.
- After vacuuming, use a clean, soft bristled brush to gently restore the nap (the texture of the fibers) and keep the material looking even.
- If you are dealing with a stain, proceed with caution. Use a very small amount of a gentle interior cleaner and lightly work it into the affected area with a soft brush.
- It is important to avoid over applying product, as excess moisture can lead to additional staining or discoloration.
- Immediately blot the area dry with a clean microfiber towel.
- To help prevent water spots or uneven drying, allow the area to air dry as quickly as possible. Using a fan or increasing airflow inside the vehicle can significantly help with this process.
2. Protection
Protecting suede or Alcantara surfaces is more about prevention and maintenance than applying heavy coatings or dressings. The best form of protection is keeping the material clean and dry. Regularly vacuuming and gently brushing the surface helps prevent dirt from embedding into the fibers, which is what typically leads to staining and wear over time.
If you want added protection, you can use a dedicated fabric or suede protectant, but this should be done in an incredibly thin and even layer. Avoid over-saturating the surface just like in the cleaning process listed above, as too much product can alter the look or feel of the suede.
Pro Tips
- Protect your leather with a product that blocks UV rays
- Leather seats should never feel greasy or oily
- An extractor or steamer can remove more dirt, grime and deodorize interior upholstery surfaces but make sure you follow the manufacturer directions.
- Products designed for leather surfaces will work on most syntehtic leather and leatherette surfaces as well
- Use dedicated products for suede and Alcantara surfaces.
- Clean spills and fabrics first, do not rely on air fresheners to mask smells.
- Use compressed air or a blower. These are great for loosening dirt from cracks, crevices, and seams before vacuuming.
