Pump? Pass. The IK e Foam Pro 2 Does It Better
by Reece @ DIAs someone who is always looking for efficient and effective gear to make detailing faster and more enjoyable, I was recently sent a IK e Foam Pro 2 test unit from the great people at IK and I have to say, I am extremely fond of it.
The e Foam Pro 2 is a compact, battery powered foam sprayer, but do not let the size fool you, this thing performs like a champ across a variety of setups.
Easy Controls, Smart System
I wanted to start off with a breakdown of the unit itself as using the IK e Foam Pro 2 is a breeze, once you know how it works.
The unit has an indicator light that makes it easy to know what state it is in:
- Solid light (not blinking) means the unit is powered on, but not activated. In this mode, the compressor will not auto-start when the pressure drops.
- Blinking light means the compressor is activated, and it will automatically kick in when the internal pressure drops.
- Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds to turn the unit on or off.
- Tap the button again to activate or deactivate the compressor.
Once the unit is powered on and the light is blinking, wait until the safety valve pops out and the compressor stops running before you start foaming. After that, you are good to go! The compressor handles everything automatically, maintaining consistent pressure throughout your session.
A Note on Safety
One important thing to keep in mind and something that IK stressed I mention, do not let the base of the sprayer come into contact with standing water or chemicals. Of course some water is bound to happen, I mean we are washing the vehicle! However, there are ventilation grills around the bottom, and if water or foam gets inside, it can damage the internal compressor. This is not a flaw, just a necessary consideration with an electric unit. As long as you are mindful of where you place it, you will not have any issues.
Excellent Foam Output with Great Dwell
For my test, I paired the IK e Foam Pro 2 with McLaren Car Care Snow Foam, using just one capful of shampoo in 1.5L of water. I was genuinely impressed by the thick, clinging foam that stayed in place with no problem.
To show how well it performs, I took photos at 0 seconds, 30 seconds, and 90 seconds dwell times. Even after a minute and a half, while the foam was not thick, there was still some clinging to vertical panels. For a battery powered unit that is so compact, that is a big win.
Coverage and Efficiency
One of the biggest questions for any foam sprayer I have is: how much can it cover? With this setup, I found that I could foam an entire vehicle if I moved quickly. But realistically, it is more manageable to split the car into two sections. Cover half, refill, and then finish. This allows you to cover the vehicle in a thicker layer of foam and the refill is not a big deal because the reservoir is small and super quick to top off, especially since you only need a tiny amount of shampoo for a thick lather. We also can not forget the last, most important fact here is that pumping is removed completely!
Final Thoughts
The IK e Foam Pro 2 saves so much effort during the detailing process that I have found that I want to use this unit again, and again. Most handheld foamers take many manual pumps to pressurize the unit and the pressure you have built during this process does not last that long. This has generally caused me to use hand foamers only for spot treatments or wheel cleanings, however, the e Foam Pro 2 has now caused me to consider using this for quick washings of the entire vehicle as well.
It is compact, efficient, and delivers professional grade foam without the hassle of a pressure washer, pumping a hand foamer, or pulling out a larger battery operated foamer that you have packed away. Yes, the reservoir is small, but that is a trade off for its portability and convenience.
For quick jobs, mobile setups, or even home users who want pro results, the IK e Foam Pro 2 hits all the right notes and is extremely, highly, recommended.
