This pad seems to perform well. Using it on a '19 VW(which has hard paint) and it makes quick work of light swirls and scratches and perhaps anything induced during a years-worth of washes. A few spots of fluid etching were gone in one pass, too. I am using it with Sonax Perfect Finish and the combination is very clean zero dust to speak of. Takes a few passes for any detectable heat to build-up. I feel these are safe to use for beginners who have just started machine polishing but may be worried about causing harm to a clear coat. Typically, if that is a concern, one opts for a foam pad but depending on the make of the vehicle a foam pad may not have enough cut to get any meaningful results. If you spend the time prepping and polishing you want to see results. This pad can probably offer you that with most compounds or polishes. The 3" performs as well as the 6".

I used these pads with a 1 step on a VW Beetle. The paint was very smooth afterwards.
