If your detailing needs include heavy wheel cleaning, then I can't recommend the Sonax Wheel Cleaner enough. It's truly a fantastic product!
What makes Sonax Full Effect different than other wheel cleaning products is that it is designed to chemically react with the sintered iron particles (brake dust) that are on or embedded into the surface of the wheels. By dissolving these corrosive iron particles, Sonax provides a much cleaner surface than traditional wheel cleaners can do.
I get to test more products than you can imagine, and usually I just find relatively small differences from one to the other. Rarely do I find products that provide serious "wow-factor". I have to admit that during these tests, the Sonax Full Effect Wheel Cleaner most definitely provided the wow-factor!
For detailers that work on a lot of really bad wheels, I would highly recommend having this product available to cut down on wheel cleaning time. Or for enthusiasts with cars that don't get cleaned that often, this would be a great wheel cleaner to have in your arsenal.

I've used Sonax for a while and been more than happy with the results. I had my son's 2020 GMC Denali in to clean it up and apply a coating, but did'n know if this is safe to use on polished aluminum wheels, so I did the wheels by hand. Is this safe for polished aluminum?
Product never worked. Bought 2 5gal jigs. Waste of money, period. Before I used Sonax wheel cleaner in smaller bottles and those always worked flawlessly.
I'm an acid base wheel brighter lover but the downside to it is that it is acid base so not every customer has a factory or aftermarket coated rim so that's why I bought 3 small size bottles to keep for those times where the M-Pro would take the polished finish off but after using on my personal truck 2018 2500HD Denali with stock wheels just to see if it lived up to the hype and I'm here to say it absolutely does and I now will order 2 of the 5L jugs because I will be using this as much or more from now on as much as I will use the wheel brightner don't get me wrong I still love the acid base it works great and I've been using it so long and really like it so much I'd never just completely switch but if you're looking for a safe way to go and are not 100% sure if the rim has a clear coat I highly suggest trying this and the reason it turns green to red is because it's reacting to the ferrous metal contamination of brake dust Etc so The Sonax full Effect wheel cleaner gets 2 thumbs up from me I will always have this in my arsenal of products
This wheel cleaner is great. I used it on a fairly dirty painted aluminum wheel that had a good amount of break dust and dirt on it. I let the product sit for 2 minutes and then sprayed off using a low power electric power washer. It removed just about all of the dirt and grime that was on the surface and barrel of the wheel. No damage to any of the surface as well. I will note that I did try this product on a spare painted wheel that I had. I left the wheel in the sun for a few minutes just to see how the cleaner would react on a hot wheel. It did leave some heavy staining that took some time to remove with polish. Would suggest not using this product in the sun and try to make sure the wheels are cool to the touch.
The best product for rims hands down. Cheaper to buy by the gallon with a DI spray bottle. No guess work. Spray on wait to change colors and rinse well. Your done.
Absolutely amazing! I got this for my own car and Hyundai brake pads don't generally create a lot of dust but regardless, I was impressed with it and the way it changes color as it reacts with the iron particles in the dust. I went from impressed to utterly amazed when I got my hands on an Audi A4 that hadn't been washed in a year. The front wheels were caked black with that typical German brake dust but after a few minutes soaking in the Sonax Full Effect and a quick rinse, they were 90% clean. Just a quick wipedown was all that was needed to bring the silver color back up. I'll never go without this stuff again! The only issue I have with it is the smell...it's not necessarily awful but it isn't pleasant either.

Best product for your brake dust! Wow, I was so impressed with results. Follow directions, let it sit for a few minutes and outstanding results. With heavier build-up, you may have to agitate but a cloth afterwards is fine, it broke it down that much. Does not smell like other reviews. Size of bottle is small so may have to upsize to last longer..
One of the best wheel cleaners I have ever used!
Worked very well, it has a very nice spray pattern compared to others that go everywhere. In a hurry I can spray it on let it sit and take the pressure washer to it with almost as good results as if I took the extra time to use my wheel woolies.

Perhaps my wheels were already just too clean -- the green never turned red. I think I saw some red on the brake rotors, though, so it does work. Smells awful (just be aware).
Excellent product. Works just as it says. Works a little better with some mild agitation, but really very little, and great results. Only complaint is that it didn't go a very long way and is pricey. But would definitely recommend.
Ive used a couple wheel cleaning products out there and this is one of the best out there. The working time on it is perfect. Spray on, and let it sit for a couple minutes. The product will turn red to let you know the cleaner has reacted with the brake dust, which makes it very user friendly even for new detailers. Agitate the product using a wheel brush and spray off to reveal a clean wheel, it's that simple. If you regularly detail your vehicle (once a week) it's worth getting the 5L container which will still last you a full car season. The only con is if your running agressive track pads, as I do, it may take a little more agitation or even a second spray depending on how much break dust has built up. If you're running track pads I would recommend the Sonax Wheel Cleaner Plus as it is a little stronger product.

Sonax Full Effect makes short work of cleaning and detailing filthy rotten dirty wheels! It is ph neutral and can also be used to remove iron contamination from paint.
Huge fan! Worked amazingly in my brake dust covered wheels, sprayed it on and let it sit a few minutes then rinsed off. Smell is a little odd, but works great.
Upon recommendation of a DI detailer blog - purchased this product and used it on my new '15 Audi A5. Very pleased with my initial order, the smaller size and service. So much so, I ordered the largest size and feel very confident using DI in providing me with solidly good products to use in my detailing of my auto.
Makes your job a lot easier, I like to use it but with it being so expensive I tend to just use a regular wheel cleaner.
Sprayed it on the wheel and let it sit and rinsed it off and watched all the brake dust fall off. Required very little to no cleaning after sonax was rinsed off

Great cleaner. Brake dust just comes right off, funky smell though and definitely don't get it on your hands because it does cause pain. I guess its toxic to some extent. Use gloves and get the big bottle because it does get used up quickly. Despite the small flaw I will for sure buy it again.

Definitely a great cleaner. I tested out today and my very dirty bbs wheels and you all know bmw brakes give off a lot of dust. I literally just sprayed it and did some quick wheel brush. Rinsed and the wheels were very clean without even having to really wash them. One word of advice though...USE GLOVES! I got some on my hands obviously while cleaning the wheels and I have discomfort in my hands even 2 hours later. Definitely not a product you want to be using without gloves. Maybe its harmless but it doesn't feel harmless.
Works great, I used it on my Shelby GT500 wheels that were in bad shape with brake dust and grime The results were unbelievable the black wheels looked new. I would definitely purchase it again.
Awesome! I wanted to be very careful regarding which product to use for my new wheels/rims. It totally surpassed any and all expectations! Easy to use! I'm going to order the large size next time. It is a must have in my cleaning supplies.
This is a very good product. Leaves the wheels sparkling clean. I will say though that it did not turn red and really begin to dissolve the brake dust until I sponge-agitated it. You can also go thru a bottle of this pretty fast, and it's not cheap. Does what it says, some (but minimal) effort, a little pricey.

There is NO better wheel cleaner out there! Absolutely love this, and I love that I can use it without concern that the chemical will etch a wheel's finish, unlike other products on the market! Sonax FTW!
Great wheel cleaner. I've used this 4 times when cleaning my wheels as they get caked with brake dust. This definitely helps remove the dust and makes the overall cleaning process easier. I like that it changes color so you know it's working. The only negative is that there is not much product in the bottle. In my opinion, you don't get a lot of bang for your buck. It is not a cheap product and it didn't last me that long. Maybe I am using to much per wheel?
Either way it is still a great product, if not the best wheel cleaning product on the market for removing brake dust or any other build up. I would 100% recommend this product for any wannabe detailer or professional.

I have tried several wheel cleaners over the years and this is by far the best.On some very dirty wheels with significant caked on brake dust,I tried another brand of "heavy duty" wheel cleaner and it would not clean the wheeIs .I then used the Sonax and it removed all the brake dust.This is the best cleaner for very dirty wheels.
I like this product but was hoping to love it. My car has Brembo brakes that create a lot of dust so I was looking for a spray on, rinse off solution. That is unfortunately not the case with this product. For me, it's a spray on, let sit for 2-3 mins, agitate the barrel of the wheel, then clean the face and pockets and finally rinse with the hose. While this product works significantly better than the typical over the counter product, I have had similar results with the Griots heavy duty wheel cleaner.

Works just as stated. Make sure you use on cool wheels. Does not work well when wheels are at hot temperatures(ex: after driving vehicle) suggest using pressure washer and let product sit for at least 5-7min. Then RINSE! and all debris on wheel will come off.

My go-to wheel cleaner after trying many products through the years. It does a great job on my BMW 3'ers wheels, which are notorious for brake dust, when I spray it on, wait, and then hose them off. I like watching the reaction as it turns color, and the smell is okay too.
Nothing magical here in my opinion, but it works. I would buy this again when it goes on sale. Otherwise, it's too expensive compared to other products that work as well. he chemical that turns from green to purple seems to get people excited, but it's just a chemical reaction to iron of a very common and inexpensive additive. What I don't like about it is that the fumes are harsh and I can't use it in the garage with a towel and QD rinse because the smell is insane, so you need a hose for this.
This has been my best wheel cleaner that I've tried. I've tried P21S wheel cleaner, and some other ones that I had gotten from the local parts store, can't remember the names. This stays on the wheel and you can definitely see it working in action. I spray it on and use a soft brush to agitate it gently. The brake dust and other crud comes right off! I even like the smell, it's kind of a funky citrus smell but it is unique.
Not only is Sonax Full Effect the best wheel cleaner in the market in my opinion, it's one of the safest as well. I've used Sonax on some of the most bespoke automobiles and have never had anything short of amazing results with this product. We've been using it in our detail studio for years and will probably continue to do so, unless something else comes along that can top Full Effect. As for safety, it has never damaged or etched a wheel since we've used it. I've used other cleaners and nothing has come close in our opinion. SweetCars will be using Sonax Full Effect as our main wheel cleaner for many years to come I'm sure.
I have an Audi which is a huge producer of brake dust. I'm now buying Full Effect by the 5L size. On dry wheels I spray the FE and wait for it to change color from yellow to red. Then I spray a bit of soapy foam (either CG Honeydew Snow Foam or MaxiSuds) onto the wheel and give a quick wash with boars hair wheel brush and my wheels look GREAT. I think Audi will keep Sonax in business a long time :)
This is my go-to product for cleaning the wheels of any BMW. I spray it on, agitate the stubborn brake dust with a brush, and rinse it off. Works perfectly and doesn't harm the wheels!
This is a great wheel cleaner. I detailed a 2008 BMW with very dirty wheels with a lot of brake dust..Within 2 min. the wheels turned red as per the instructions and a little brush work and they were as good as new.The smell I think is a bit strong for lime. It's worth it.

I have used a variety of wheel cleaners on my personal vehciles as well as in my part time detailing venture. Detailed Image was running a special on Sonax Full Effect ( 2 bottles and dashboard cleaner for $30) and I have read about Sonax on various detailing websites, so I decided to give it a try.
I was amazed at how quickly and how well it cleaned wheels. My son used it on the wheels of his F150 and it removed some stubborn staining that no other wheel celaner even put a dent in. I have found my new wheel cleaner!

The BEST hands down wheel cleaner EVER. I got some free with the Wheel Woolies, and I had never heard of it. I assumed wheel cleaner was wheel cleaner and the scrubbing was part of life. Not so with Sonax. The ease of use is incredible. I compared it to Griot's Garage HD Wheel Cleaner and there was no comparison. My previous favorite was a little odd, but I used aircraft soap and that was my go-to wheel cleaner for 10 years. I haven't even touched it since using Sonax. I removed my wheels and cleaned the barrels once, very thoroughly, and Sonax has enabled me to maintain the perfect, dust-free finish with almost no effort. I bought the gallon before the small bottle was even gone. There is no turning back.
I decided to give the Sonax a try after using Meguire's Wheel cleaners for years with high success. Sonax has taken wheel cleaning into a whole new level and it also makes it fun (if you are into color changing solutions). The cure time is 3-5 minutes after applying to a dry wheel, and rinsing it off makes it just that easy. I would say this product is to be used for wheels that are maintained regularly and don't require much scrubbing with a Daytona. For the price, it is more than others, however very easy and fun to use. Will buy again!
I tried this product with high hopes on my wifes neglected 2001 S 2000. I did one side with Poorboy's World APC cut 15 to 1, that I use for everything. I nor my friends could tell the expensive cleaner side. Works good but too expensive!
While expensive compared to other wheel cleaners, this product works, and works better than others I have tried. Not a lot of brushing is needed- the product is strong enough to life brake dust and other dirt from the wheels.

I tried P21S gel first, It worked, but not that well. Tried this stuff and was sold, this is the best wheel cleaner I've used to date. Safe on all sorts of wheels, and it really cleans! Do yourself a favor and order the 5L container, your going to want to use this on every set of rims you come across!
Good stuff. In just a few minutes my wheels looked almost new. Works really well only con was I felt it used a lot to cover all wheels, could be the wheels and spoke patern or maybe I sprayed too much to make sure the wheel were covered
I'm a P21s guy and decided to give this a shot. Big mistake. I think it etched the wheels on my SLK55 AMG. I did see the chemical turn from green to red and I used it properly. When the wheel dried, the polished metal had a hazy look and now it looks like I need to pull out some P21s metal polish and go to town and then seal the wheels. I'm not happy and I cannot recommend.
Very effective at removing brake dust and leaving a clean surface. Seems to take a fair amount to be effective, but as this was the first time I had cleaned these wheels, it may be that the wheels needed the extra treatment. I may try a less expensive product now that my wheels have been cleaned and sealed. I would recommend this product to anyone needing to remove serious brake dust.
The first time I used Sonax I was really impressed. I cleaned a set of wheels I got out of a wrecking yard that were in awful condition. I sprayed it on let it set a few minutes and then brushed them then rinsed with a hose and they were amazingly clean, I did have to clean a second time since they were in such bad condition but after the second cleaning they looked like new. Today I cleaned a set of chrome Escalade wheels that had not been cleaned in a very long time. With just a little brushing effort and then rinsing they too look new. My customer could not believe the wheels looked so good after I finished .
Holy Moly...didn't think it would impress me since I used just about every brand cleaner you can get from all the autoparts stores. This stuff made the dreaded wheel cleaning a fascinating and fun event. I ordered 1 bottle and used the whole thing on this first cleaning. That was a few hours ago, now I am here writing this review and just ordered the 5 liter plus another 16 oz. bottle since I foolishly threw the old empty bottle away.
Yes this stuff works. No it will not clean insanely baked in wheels COMPLETELY. However, I have a hunch that if I had enough juice to apply to the baked in wheels multiple times, this stuff would eventually dissolve all that brake dust. I highly recommend it.

One of few products that does what it says and is as easy to use as the directions lead you to believe. I have a BMW 328i which are notorious for ridiculous amounts of brake dust. This stuff is truly spray on and spray off. Some areas that I had let get bad were the only scrubbing required but a fraction of the scrubbing compared to any other wheel cleaner I have ever used.
Used this on both my wife's Q5 and my A5, worked amazing, wheels still look good after two weeks of driving.
Great stuff. If this product doesn't get your wheels clean, nothing will. Really handy for detailed wheels that are a PITA to clean with multiple nooks and crannies. Luckily, mine are relatively simple. Also, when you use this cleaner with a detail brush, it does an excellent job on the rim barrels.
While this is a good cleaner, it just couldn't perform for me. I applied the product as directed to 3 year old wheels with baked on brake dust. While it did remove a considerable amount of the brake dust, even with agitation with a brush and allowing the product to sit for several minutes, it just couldn't get the wheels completely clean. After all the positive reviews, I felt sure this product would be the one for my job, but it left me disappointed.
The Best!!! Nothing else to say. I have iforge wheel with high polish which made my life hell. The wheel cleaner saved my day. Simply spread on and rinse. P21S can not even compete.
I have a white car on white wheels so it's a bit of a pain to keep clean. When it comes to the Sonax cleaner it's amazing. I spray on it and watch it turn from green to red and then use the highest power I can on the hose to spray it down at which point most of the dust is gone. Some spots (being I have white wheels) will still have a gray finish which wipe off with an easy towel swipe since it's all loose already.
Used this prior to taking my wheels in to be refinished. Cleaned them up so well that I doubt the repairman had to do much in that regard. The stuff is terrific. When it turns red and you hit it with a brush, it does look a bit like a murder scene though! Ha!
If you are looking for a fantastic wheel cleaner look no further. I have tried everything made and settled on PS-21. I recently ran out so I decided to try Sonax because the reviews are great. All I can say is that this stuff is beyond fantastic. Spray on and 5 mins later rinse the wheel and it actually fully cleans the wheel. No scrubbing at all, no lie. Buy this product and you will not regret it.
Use to be a big fan of P21S wheel cleaner but after using this the first time, I've since switched over to Sonax for my main wheel cleaning product. I don't know if it's as safe as the P21S but it works a lot faster and stronger for sure. Just make sure you don't apply this in the sun and let your wheels dry. I usually apply this in the shades and make sure I don't let it dry out completely just to be safe. The color changing effect really works, when you apply it on a dirty set of wheels with brake dust...the color changes from green to red. Once your wheel is clean from brake dust, you'll notice that the color does not change if there is no brake dust to break down!
too funny - Raman A had the exact same experience as i did. both on bmw wheels that would otherwise be a pain to clean, both with the EZ detail brush. cleaning my wheels takes almost no effort/time, i'm back here to buy the 5 liter jug!
This is the BEST wheel cleaner I have ever used. I just ordered the 5 litre jug so that I never run out. Works wonders even on my BMW's wheels which are infamous for building up brake dust. I use spray some one, let it soak in a bit, then use the EZ detail brush to get the wheel wells clean. Flawless end results.
OK the absolute best wheel cleaner out there. I am in the process of selling this to everyone who sees the after part when used to clean their wheels. My clients love who I can get the results of I get and it is because of this fantastic product. Great smell and very professional bottle that allows you to not waste the product sprays a thin and even amount which lets it last a long time. I need to start buying it by the gallon. sigh**
Great wheel cleaner, an absolute pleasure to use. Spray and green, wash it off when it turns red. I have used it on wheels with a clearcot finish and they come out nice and shiny. I will definitely buy this product again.
It is absolutely unreal how well this works. I saw Todd's write up and had to pick it up. The front rims of our x5 were bad. So bad that i waited another 2 weeks before trying Sonax on them just to see how good this was. IT WAS UNREAL how clean they got the wheels!!! So the next week i tried it on my 22 year old bmw basketweave rims and was as equally impressed. The smell is really good, the ONLY thing you have to really be careful w/this stuff. You don't want to get this on your hands or on your skin. wear gloves and eye protection. As a bonus, the red looks awesome when it reacts to the dust.

How the heck does this stuff work?!?! It goes from neon green to blood red after it eats away all your brake dust! I'm no chemist, so I'll just play it safe and assume it's black magic.

Great Wheel Cleaner. I'm on my 2nd bottle. Really cleans up Wheels very well. A little expensive for a wheel cleaner but you get your Money's worth. Follow the recommended instructions and you should be good. No CONS I can find with this wheel cleaner as far as CLEANING ability goes. Highly Recommended!!
Pretty awesome product! Price was almost a deal breaker but I decided to pick it up and it's great it would be even better if it was cheaper though.
I can say beyond the shadow of a doubt that this stuff works wonders......Coupled with Stoner's Tarminator, there is nothing this cleaner can't do. I just spray, hang for 2mn MAX, take a brush and water to the wheel and VOILA...boom goes the dynamite. Smells like complete butt but I will gladly make that sacrifice for such a fantastic product....it's kinda like accepting a hot chick that can't do math
The fact that its safe on all wheels types, makes this the go to wheel cleaner for my shop. Whether factory wheels or custom 3-piece forged wheels, this is our first choice. Even baked on brake dust is no match. Though it may take a few applications and some sustained dwell time, it basically "chews" through the brake dust.
Great wheel cleaner! If my wheels aren't too dirty, I really can just spray this on, wait a bit, and rinse off. Otherwise it sometimes needs a little scrubbing first. The first bottle I bought (back in April) smelled awful, but the new one has a "lemon scent" which smells much better and masks the old "70's hair perm" smell.
Great stuff. A little spendy. I can see where this would be great on euro cars where they have dusting issues with the brake pads. Its an aggressive cleaner with a low PH that works best with a little agitation. Don't let the label fool you, it says lemon scented but it smells like lemon death. Small concession to make for how well it works. This stuff was back ordered forever when I placed my order, but DI kept me informed and rewarded me for being patient. Thank you DI! If you are going to order, buy 2 bottles and reorder when you finish the first.

This is a great product. Spray on, wait 5 minutes, and spray off. Unfortunately I had heavy brake dust build-up on the inner wheel barrels and used almost the entire 16oz bottle. As others have noted, there really should be a size between 16oz and 1 gallon. Do yourself a favor and get the 1 gallon size.
This product works very well. Spray it on, agitate a little and super clean wheels. Even gets around the lug nuts clean. I wish there was a size in between the little spay bottle size and the super huge size. This is the best wheel cleaner I have tried.

This stuff is really something different, unlike any wheel cleaner you have ever used. Works so good and it's fun watching the floresent green gel liquid turn to purple when reacting with the particles on the wheels. It goes fast so buy the big 5 liter jug. I bought 2 small containers first till I learned the big one is the way to go. Best wheel cleaner I have ever used hands down.

This product is AMAZING!!!!! I saturated some heavily caked Audi wheels and the brake dust just melted off. Required no scrubbing what so ever.
Tried some of this on my daughters beater hubcaps covered in brake dust. This works *so* much better on heavily contaminated wheels than the PS21 wheel gel. The brake dust literally melted away with virtually no scrubbing. If you have heavy deposits, try this.
What is there to say about Sonax that hasn't been said? Sonax cleaned up about 95% of the caked on dirt/brake dust/etc on my wheels, probably could have gotten close to 100% clean with a better agitator. After I have used sonax, I follow up on maintenance washes with CG Diablo Gel.
This is one product that really blew my socks off. I have Black Volk rims and this product works Wonders without effort the wheel clear coat. it does have a good smell. It cleans well and get rid of all the brake dust. the result was amazing.Excellent product, This stuff definitely packs a punch.Highly Recommended!
In the past I have relied on the P21S wheel Gel cleaner exclusively for my BMW's wheels. As some might know, BMW is notorious for using heavy dusting brake pads leading to frequent cleaning needed for the wheels (particularly the front ones). The SONAX cleaner was equal if slightly better than the P21S. It did not require as long of a dwell time and was pretty effective in cleaning the wheels with some additional help with a wheel brush. Going forward, for me either the P21S and the SONAX will work depending on the price.

Worked really good on my stock wheels. It has a very nice spray head so you don't waste a lot of product.
This is by far the best non-acidic wheel cleaner I have ever used. I put my wheels through a torture test with full race pads on my Subaru WRX, and this cleaner cuts through that build-up with ease. This is by far better than p21s wheel cleaner. Out of the premium priced wheel cleaners this is the best. If you are just pulling light duty, Chemical Guys Diablo gel will do fine and much cheaper (can be diluted 3:1). But for tough jobs this is great, but does not smell the best fair warning.
After being let down by P21S Gel, I was reluctant to spend this much money on another wheel cleaner again. I took a chance and tried this stuff on my painted Viper wheels, in concert with the EZ detail brush. Oh my god I was appalled! I only had this stuff on my wheels for 5min each, compared to two hours with the P21S which didn't work. My only regret is not buying more bottles because its now on backorder.

Safe, effective and easy to use. It smells great and you can see it in action. It will apply in a bright green react with break dust and turn red. Pressure wash at your are done. I have tried all wheel cleaners and this is by far the best.
The must economical way to go is with the 5Liter container.
